Random Acts Of Kindness

This is my assignment from Santa Monica College. The assignment was to write a 5 page short story in script format, select crew and cast actors. The time limit was one class period which was 4 hours to setup, shoot and breakdown the equipment. This video is a rough cut until I take the editing class in the fall. This is my first project and it was a great learning experience. I expect future projects to improve drastically.

Of Light and Darkness Longplay (Act II Part 1/7)

Game Description:

Judgment day has come for Earth, and time is running out. You are the only thing standing between the human race and an apocalypse. Saving the world in Of Light and Darkness: The Prophecy primarily consists of redeeming apparitions, ghosts of people who–in life–committed one of the seven deadly sins.

You begin the game in a netherworld between the realms of light and dark, facing a demonic jack-in-the-box and listening to a court proceeding of some kind. It gets no less strange from here. Apparently, you are “The Chosen One” upon whom the world depends to rescue it from an end-of-millennium-style cataclysm. You are dropped into a strange village of buildings and rooms, many of which represent the seven deadly sins. Apocalypse and end-of-time tales from the full range of world cultures are quoted in some of the rooms. You collect variously colored orbs, pyramid-shaped portals, and odd artifacts like a necklace or saber. Apparitions appear in the form of floating death masks, each demanding its own artifact back from you. The specters represent 31 of history’s most notorious evil-doers, from Wa-No-Te, a pernicious womanizer from Mongolia (c. 4117 BC) to contemporary serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Occasionally, a colored flash will fill your screen, and at other times a hologram will appear near you in which a lovely lady named Angel (played by Lolita Davidovich) is exchanging world-class obscure dialogue with Gar Hob, “The Dark Lord of the Seventh Millennium” (played by James Woods).

Of Light and Darkness poses some tricky problems and has one feature not usually seen in first-person role-playing games: players are running against a clock. Failure to redeem apparitions on a tight schedule brings on doomsday with alacrity. As a result of this deadline, the game has a repetitive element. Once you understand how to redeem apparitions–a fairly complex procedure–the action moves swiftly. The level of difficulty does not remain static, however, because apparitions become increasingly dangerous. Though the stakes are high, the grim tone is leavened with stunning graphics and random witty touches. (The movement icon, for example, is a pair of mismatched socks.)

Winning this game takes dedication and quick footwork, but players will enjoy racing the Clock of Judgment to the final confrontation with Hob.

Quick Overview of the Acts:

Of Light and Darkness features 4 acts where the gameplay takes place.

In act I, there are 9 normal apparitions that need to be redeemed.

In act II, there are 21 normal apparitions that need to be redeemed. Also, some of the rooms are locked at the start and need to be opened with the scattered artifacts.

In act III, there are also 21 apparitions that need to be redeemed, but unlike act II, act III features special apparitions and dark lords. Special apparitions and dark lords need to be redeemed in special rooms not available in acts I and II. Also, they are much faster when it comes to the moving around the map (village to be precise) and they will punish the player severely if they are caught while you’re holding their artifact. Some of the rooms are also locked at the start and need to be opened like in act II. Finally, and to reiterate, act III features 14 standard apparitions, 4 special apparitions, and 3 dark lords which need to be redeemed.

Act IV has no apparitions of any kind that need to be redeemed. The final act takes place on the Dark Isle where the player is confronted with the final puzzle by Gar-Hob.
